Morbidity and Mortality

M&M's are approximately every 4-6 weeks on the conference schedule. Please adhere to the following format for slide presentation. Slides should be limited to 4-7 slides of written content with 3-6 slides of photos and should focus on the complication. Ten slide maximum. Discussion should be limited to the complication. The goal should be to learn attending level decision-making. Goal should be to present in 7 minutes with 7 minutes of questions and discussions. Plan to complete 4-5 M&M in 1 hour.

Title Slide: 1 slide limit
Include: Faculty Name, Complication, Operation, Date of Service
Be sure to include your case numbers on this slide

Background: 2 slide limit
Include pertinent clinical information to the adverse outcome:

  • Patient History
  • Indication for intervention
  • Laboratory and Imaging Studies
  • Procedural details
  • Hospital Course - related to outcome
  • How and when the complication was recognized
  • Management of the complication or event


Assessment and Analysis: Optional; 1 slide limit
Evaluation of what happened and why:

  • Describe the sequence of events leading to the adverse outcome
  • Why it occurred - description of contributory factors and how these interacted across the system

Review of Literature: 2 slide limit

  • Present the evidence base relevant to the complication.

Recommendations: 1 slide limit

  • identify how the complication or event could have been prevented or better managed
  • identify learning points from the case
  • identify actions to prevent or minimize future reoccurrence.
